Compared to healthy pregnant women, serum galectin-9 concentrations taken before delivery were positively correlated with BMI and parameters related to the amount of adipose tissue assessed in the early postpartum period, and there was a correlation between serum galECTin- 9 concentrations take before and after delivery.

Lower UC gal-1 levels, when mothers were older, and increasedUC gal-3 levels in cases of gestational diabetes, possibly reflect angiogenic activity in intrauterine growth restricted, large and appropriate for gestational age (AGA) pregnancies.

Chorioamnionitis is associated with an increased galectin-1 mRNA expression and strong immunoreactivity of the chorioamniotic membranes; thus, galectIn-1 may be involved in the regulation of the inflammatory responses to chorioamionitis.

The results suggest that gal-1 plays a key role in pregnancy maternal immune regulation by modulating HLA-G expression on trophoblast cells, and could serve as a predictive factor for pregnancy success in early human gestation.

It is suggested that Gal-9/TIM-3 pathway could play an important role in the immune regulation during pregnancy and the altered Galectin-9 and TIM-3 expression could result an enhanced systemic inflammatory response including the activation of Th1 lymphocytes in preeclampsia.
